Steinhatchee is only a 2 1/2 hour drive from Jacksonville, and it feels like a whole different world. This is "old Florida" and the fishing is amazing! And scallop season just started-all you need is a fishing license and you could be grabbing scallops.
We brought an inflatable dinghy from West Marine and headed to Hagen's Cove which is about 11 miles out of Steinhatchee. It is shallow enough that people were scalloping using just a pool noodle!
We were saving our energy for snorkeling though, so we added a motor that runs on propane and went out looking for scallops!
Last year we got our limit in AN HOUR. This year, not so much. Those guys were hiding at Hagen's Cove! But we did end up with enough to make this delicious ceviche.
And we saw turtles, sting rays, fish, crabs, and the most beautiful Gulf skies while we were there.
If you want to camp, a great spot to park your RV or your tent is Piddler's Point RV Campground with a HUGE pool and really nice people.
And thanks to our friends at TravelCamp RV, you could be heading out in your home away from home and go to fun places like this every weekend.
