Eric Church Was 'Going Through the Motions' Before Writing New Music

What began as a funk turned into brand-new music from Eric Church.

The Chief's latest release, "Desperate Man," officially drops today (July 13) and was written following the tragic events last October at the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas.

“I was a little lost for a while," he tells Rolling Stone of the time after the shooting that took the lives of 58 country fans and wounded 489 more. "I think like a lot of people I was in a little bit of a funk after something like that. I was still a little burned out. A little bit going through the motions. I think that’s part of what happened when I first went into the studio, is I still wasn’t quite ready to get there."

Eric performed at Route 91 a few days prior to the shooting and goes on to say "Desperate Man" was born from his desperation to rediscover his country craft.

“That’s where ‘Desperate Man’ kind of came from,” he adds. “I wrote that in the studio. I got a little bit desperate in there to just find an album, because it was not...happening.”

"Desperate Man" is the first single from Eric's forthcoming sixth studio album also entitled Desperate Man.

Desperate Man drops October 5.
