St. Augustine Turns 456 Years Old, Some History You Might Not Know!

St. Augustine has turned 456 years old!

St. Augustine was founded on September 8th, 1565 making it the oldest city in the Nation. Pedro Menendez found the spot on the day which happened to be the feast of St. Augustine of Hippo (Catholic Saint of his hometown), which is how the settlement was named St. Augustine.

Now it is believed that Juan Ponce de Leon first landed in Florida, naming it La Florida which means "place of flowers". Florida became an official state in 1845!

And did you know that the first Thanksgiving probably happened in St. Augustine 40 years before Plymouth, MA?
