Operation Storm Watch Jacksonville: Tornado Terminology

What is the difference between a Tornado Watch, a Tornado Warning and a Tornado Emergency? The National Weather Service has three key alerts to watch out for.

Have you determined the safest place to seek shelter from a tornado? In your home, locate an interior room (no windows) on the lowest floor. If you are outdoors or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris. If you are unable to do so lie flat in a ditch or other low-lying area and protect your head and stay away from poles or overhead lines; or drive at right angles to the tornado's path.

Do you have an emergency supply kit? Make sure it is located in your safe room. Common supplies are: Water, Food, Battery-powered or hand crank radio with extra batteries, Flashlight, First Aid Kit, and Medicine. Consider adding the following items to your emergency supply kit based on your individual needs: Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes and diaper rash cream; Pet food, extra water, and pet carrier(s). Visit Ready.gov for more recommendations.
