When Do Bridges Close?

One of the most frequently asked questions during a storm is: Will any bridges be closed?

Bridges will close when sustained winds reach 40 miles per hour for one minute or more, not including periodic gusts. These closures can occur suddenly and typically without prior notice.

However, not all bridges will necessarily close, as they are situated at varying elevations. For instance, the Matthews, Dames Point, and Hart Bridges may experience stronger winds before some of the lower elevation bridges, such as the Fuller Warren, Main Street, and Acosta.
