Governor Ron DeSantis today asked the Florida Department of Education to take action against people who are politicizing the parental objection process to weed out inappropriate books.

The governor says the classics like "To Kill a Mockingbird," "Romeo and Juliet," "Charlotte's Web" and the "Diary of Ann Frank" are not banned. But rather some are on the FDOE's preferred reading list.

DeSantis says individual school districts are responsible for upholding state education standards and policing inappropriate material. He admits that sometimes school districts get it wrong.

He adds that of the 300 books removed across the state nearly 90-percent were identified as pornographic, violent, or inappropriate for students' grade level.
