A Tornado Watch has been issued for several counties, including Hardee, Polk, DeSoto, Highlands, Charlotte, Lee, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pinellas, Sarasota, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys until 9 p.m. Wednesday.
The National Weather Service defines a tornado as: a violently rotating column of air extending from the base of a thunderstorm down to the ground. If you know what to do before, during and after a tornado, you will minimize your risk of injury and increase your chances of survival.
Some take-aways:
- When action is required, take shelter in an interior hallway on a lower floor, closet or small room.
- Don't forget pets if time allows
- Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls.
