The new police chief in Port St. Lucie is on the job. Former Assistant Chief Leo Niemczyk has been sworn in to replace Chief Richard Del Toro, who just won election to be the St. Lucie County Sheriff.

He tells CBS 12 News that the culture of the organization is one of his top priorities.

"Our visions aren't very unlike. I have a heavier emphasis on officer wellness. It reduces the stress on our officers. It reduces health problems with our officers and they treat each other a little bit better."

Niemczyk has been with the department since 2002 after moving to Florida from New York, where he was with the NYPD. He was named Assistant Chief last year.

Niemczyk says he has a heavy focus on technology and will be developing the agency's Real Time Information Center.
