How iPhone Users Can Send Text Messages Via Satellite

Thanks to Apple's latest software update, those who find themselves without cellular service or Wi-Fi after Hurricane Milton can send texts via Satellites.

Here is how to message via satellite on iPhone:

Open Connection Assistant

First, check to see is you have iOS 18. Can you do that by going to settings, then "general", then about to see the version. Or check under software update to see if there's an update available.

The Connection Assistant will help guide users wanting to connect to a satellite network. You can find the Connection Assistant in your settings app under "Satellite." Choose a satellite feature.

It can also be found in the Control Center, which you can access by swiping down the top right corner of your iPhone, tap the Cellular button on the right and tap "Satellite."

Make sure the Wi-Fi and cellular coverage is turned off for the satellite option to appear in your settings.

Connecting to a satellite

Make sure you are outside in an open area and do not have trees and other obstructions blocking the connection. Apple's Connection Assistant will guide you in the best direction to connect to a good signal.

Do not to put your phone in your pocket or bag. It is ok if your phone screen is locked, as the Satellite connections will stay active in most cases.

Messages via satellite

Your iPhone will alert you on your lock screen that you are connected and you can send and receive messages via satellite.

You will need to accept to receive messages. The texts that you try to send from your emergency contacts or your Family Sharing group will start to come in.

To send a message, open the messaging app and begin texting like normal.

You will not be able to send or receive files like photos, videos, audio messages or stickers and will not be able to send texts to group chats.

In order to receive messages, the other person will need to top "Send via Satellite" underneath the message bubble.
