Downtown Jacksonville Eyesore Coming Down This Weekend

It looks like this Sunday will finally be the day the Berkman II in downtown Jacksonville comes down.

The structure is set to be imploded at 10:00 Sunday morning.

The project has been basically abandoned since Dec. 6, 2007, when the parking garage collapsed and killed a worker and injured others. The building was condemned in 2020.

So, if everything goes as planned, that sucker will be imploded on Sunday and now, the developer is saying he wants to build Jacksonville's tallest tower in its place.

But that's a story for another time... let's talk more about Sunday, because there will be road closures around 500 Bay Street, which is where the structure is located. Starting at 7a and lasting until about noon, the following roads will be closed on Sunday:

East-West: Forsyth Street from Market to Catherine streets; Bay Street from Market to Lafayette streets; and Courthouse Drive from Market to Liberty streets.

North-South: Liberty Street from Adams Street to Courthouse Drive; and Marsh Street from Adams to Bay streets.

The roads will be shut down to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Officials say if you want to watch the implosion, go to the Southbank Riverwalk.
