Yesterday, when we got word that actor James Caan passed away, there were three half-generations of people around: someone in their late 40s; someone in their early 20s and me (61). When I said Caan's name, they both looked at me like 'where would I know him?" I told the younger one "he's Buddy's dad in ELF" Ohhhh yeahh!! I told the late 40s guy who didn't know ELF "did you see MISERY?" ohhh yeah! I remembered him first as Brian Piccolo in Brian's Song and then as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. You know you had a long career when folks know you over a span of 50 years and many different movies. Certainly being in a classic like The Godfather may span generations, or Elf becoming a perennial seasonal favorite, but for the casual viewer, it may be more generational. RIP James Caan. What movie popped in your head when you see James Caan? Let us know!
